Anchiskhati Basilica

The Anchiskhati Basilica sets in the Old Town and dates back from the 6th century. Devoted to the St Mary, this church housed from the 17th century the famous Anchiskhati icon transferred here from the Cathedral of the same name which was situated in the city of Klargeti on the territory of nowadays Turkey. The icon has been created in the encaustic technique of painting with hot wax paints. This technique originated in Byzantium in the 6th century.

The shape of the church is rectangular, the doors are decorated with traditional Georgian cross, by St. Nino. On the western facade of the temple there is a stone medallion with a cross carved out on it - the alone remain from the earliest part of the structure. The upper parts and the arch were rebuilt between the 17th and the 19th centuries.
