In the center of Tbilisi lies a main square of the republic - the Freedom Square. Over the entire period of its existence, the square has been renamed several times. In the Middle Ages, it was known as “Caravanserai”, from 1827 until the revolution it was referred to as “Erivan Square”, and in Soviet times – first as “Beria Square”, and then as “Lenin Square”.
In the center of the Freedom Square, in front of the Tbilisi City Municipality stands a 40-m high equestrian statue of St. George represented striking the dragon with his lance. The monument was created by a famous architect Zurab Tsereteli and installed here in 2006. The sculpture symbolizes the Victory over the evil; the freedom and independence of the Georgian nation. Iconographic type of the fighting Saint is very common in Georgia, but it should be noted that so far in Georgia, there was no tradition of representing saints in sculpture. From this point of view, we can say that the monument, which rises at Freedom Square is unique of its kind. The statue of Saint, worshiped by Georgians, is also called the Monument of Freedom.
Today, the square is home to many State Administration Institutions of Tbilisi, the central branch of the Georgian Bank as well as the Marriott Hotel.
