Mtatsminda mean the “Holy Mount”, it is also commonly called as Mount David, after the Holy Apostle David Garedzhiyskiy, who lived as a hermit in a cave carved out into its cliff. David was one of the 13 Syrian Fathers, who returned to Georgia in the 6th century to spread Christianity. Set in the heart of the town, in the middle of the main avenue of Tbilisi named after Georgian’s renowned poet Shota Rustaveli, the Mount David offers a breathtaking panorama of Tbilisi. From the top of Mount Mtatsminda, the city feels as if it were fitting the palm of your hand. Among other notable sites of the city are the television tower, which is 276m high, the small St. David`s Church dating back to the 19th century, as well as a small cemetery where prominent Georgian leaders were buried. On the upper level, one can see the graves of People`s Artist Sergo Zakariadze, the Russian poet Alexander Griboyedov and his wife Nina Chavchavadze. The nearby outstanding example of the fortification of the 4th century – Narikala Fortress is highly recommended to be visited too.
